Web Help: Cosmic Objects Project |
The following websites are provided to assist students in researching Cosmic Objects. A brief description of what can be found on the site is included with its URL address. Please notify VTT via email at vtt@seti.org, if a link to a website does not work.
Where do I start?
You should be able to find information about your object by typing the object's name in an internet search engine. The following websites could be used as a place to start your research. Note that not every website will have information about every object. These sites all have pictures of cosmic objects, with information about each included in the figure captions. Some of the sites may list slightly different values for distances to the objectsbecause this is an active area of research what we know changes as scientists learn more about an objectlook for the most recent information when possible.
Hubble Site Gallery: hubblesite.org/gallery/
This site contains Hubble Space Telescope gallery of images, plus an explanation of how the full color images were created. Most were taken in the visible light range of the electromagnetic spectrum.
TOPMultiwavelength Messier Museum: coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/cosmic_classroom/multiwavelength_astronomy/multiwavelength_museum/
Here, at Cool Cosmos' Multiwavelength Messier Museum online, you will find images taken in different wavelength regions of the electromagnetic spectrum (X-ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, radio) of some of the objects in the Messier catalog (completed by Charles Messier, 1987).
TOPThe National Optical Astronomy Observatory: www.noao.edu/image_gallery/
This website has images of many nebulae and galaxies, taken in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
TOPROSAT X-ray satellite: heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/rosat/rosat_images.html
Images taken in the X-ray region of the electromagnetic spectrum by the ROSAT satellite are found at this website.
TOP2MASS: www.ipac.caltech.edu/2mass/gallery/index.html
This image gallery contains images taken from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey gallery in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
TOPIRAS Gallery: coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/image_galleries/IRAS/irasgallery.html
This is another Cool Cosmos website were you will find images taken in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite.
TOPESO: www.eso.org/outreach/gallery/astro/
This website has images taken by the telescopes of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
TOPChandra X-ray www.chandra.harvard.edu/photo
Images taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory are found here.
